About The Position

The Contractual Pharmacist coordinates pharmaceutical services and assists the facility to identify, evaluate, and address pharmacy related concerns and issues that affect patients’ care, medical care, quality of life and/or regulatory compliance. Supports the pharmacy operations to ensure physician orders are reviewed and processed, and medications are dispensed timely to patients, in the safest manner possible. Complies with the state, federal, corporate, hospital, departmental standards, policies, procedures, and Code of Conduct. Practices sound administrative and professional judgment using initiative consistent with a high level of patient care. Works efficiently under broad guidelines and frequently exercises his or her own judgment in decision making and demonstrates a very high degree of accuracy.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of use and dispensing of medications.
  • Knowledge of dosing for specific age populations, required.
  • Extending periods of sitting, standing, & walking.
  • Hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform job functions, required.
  • Possess necessary knowledge to provide oversight of medication regimens for the patient populations treated in the facility.
  • Proficient computer skills using job-related computer applications.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years hospital pharmacy work experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures proper management of drug stock including, but not limited to, shelving new drug stock with proper item labeling, rotation, arranging medications, organizing storage areas, and documenting need for ordering items, while maintaining proper labeling, documentation and record keeping.
  • Ensures drug storage locations are maintained appropriately (e.g., floor stock, automated dispensing systems, emergency carts, emergency box, etc.).
  • Ensures that drug items are appropriately billed.
  • Ensures that pharmacy inventory is maintained at appropriate levels.
  • Reviews and assumes responsibility for products prepared and/or returned by pharmacy technicians.
  • Ensures that expired, recalled, wasted, and defective pharmaceuticals including medications are removed from the pharmacy active inventory area and from the medication rooms’ inventory (Including floor stock, med carts, emergency boxes, & ADCs) and stored away in Expired Bin(s) and/or Waste Bin(s) area(s) properly per policy and/or protocol.
  • Procures formulary and non-formulary items to provide optimal drug therapy.
  • Performs auditing, cycle counting, tracking, revision, and resolving controlled substance-related issues including, but not limited to, initiating cycle counts, investigating discrepancies, communicating the pharmacy concerns with Nursing and other clinicians, etc.
  • Prepares, audit, and/or reviews various medication management related reports for submission to the DOP and/or administration of the hospital.
  • Monitors and records the room temperature of the pharmacy and medication rooms daily per protocol.
  • Monitors Pharmacy and medication rooms’ refrigerator(s) and records temperature once or twice daily as needed.
  • Ensures maintaining the cleanliness and order of the pharmacy department and the medication rooms.
  • Performs periodic, and as needed, inspections of the medications rooms as assigned and/or requested by DOP.
  • Assists technicians in managing incoming telephone calls and ensures proper triage of calls.
  • Participates in and/or provides support to hospital committees as agreed upon by committee members and the Director of Pharmacy to help establish drug-related policies, criteria, or to monitor issues related to drugs.
  • Participates in the departmental and hospital performance improvement activities to promote safety and quality in the medication management process, including but not limited to, auditing, revision, and documentation of interventions of controlled substances and medications overrides, ADC replenishments, etc.
  • Assists with preparation, collection, revision, and input of performance improvement data and other job-related reports when assigned and/or requested by the director of pharmacy DOP and/or the hospital administration.
  • Understands their responsibility under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules as they relate to this job description.
  • Satisfactorily and timely completes required and/or assigned training modules and programs.
  • Assists in presenting medical, nursing, or department in-service programs.
  • Assists in orienting and training of new personnel or students to departmental services and programs.
  • Assumes duties of Director of Pharmacy in his/her absence to manage daily departmental activities.
  • Responds to patient care related codes, when requested.
