The pharmacist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care through integrated drug distribution, patient counseling and teaching. The role involves interpreting medication orders, reviewing drug therapies for contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriateness for patients. The pharmacist must be able to assess and interpret age-specific data, contact physicians for clarification, and document interventions. They provide clinical consultation and drug information to healthcare practitioners, nursing staff, patients, and families. The role also includes sustaining the hospital formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, and suggesting cost-effective alternatives. Maintaining knowledge of Louisiana and Federal pharmacy laws and DEA regulations is crucial. The pharmacist supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel, verifies technician dispensing, and oversees pharmacy operations in the absence of the Pharmacy Supervisor. They work independently, organize and prioritize assignments, and ensure timely provision of Pharmacy services. Accurate dispensing of medications and preparation of sterile admixtures, including chemotherapy and TPN, are key responsibilities. Maintaining records for controlled substances is also required.
