About The Position

The Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) is responsible for the overall management, operation, and regulatory compliance of the pharmacy. The PIC ensures the safe and effective dispensing of medications, supervises pharmacy personnel, maintains compliance with federal and state pharmacy laws, and promotes high standards of patient care. This position serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and is accountable for pharmacy operations, quality assurance, inventory management, and staff performance.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication management, and applicable pharmacy laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency with pharmacy management systems, electronic health records, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact with clients, staff, regulators, and community partners.
  • Proficient ability to read and interpret simple instructions and diagrams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to think outside of the box to resolve problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism and diplomacy.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite or related software.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy.
  • Current, unrestricted Pharmacist license in the applicable state.
  • Eligibility to serve as Pharmacist-in-Charge under State Board of Pharmacy regulations
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid (within 30 days of hire)
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Must successfully pass fingerprinting, criminal background check, and any additional clearances required by DHCS, DSS, or funding/regulatory agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of three (3) years of pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience with controlled substance management and regulatory compliance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operation of the pharmacy to ensure efficient workflow and exceptional patient care.
  • Ensure the accurate dispensing of prescription medications in accordance with applicable laws and professional standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain pharmacy policies, procedures, and quality assurance programs.
  • Monitor pharmacy performance and implement process improvements to enhance safety, efficiency, and service quality.
  • Maintain compliance with all federal, state, local, and Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • Serve as the designated Pharmacist-in-Charge for regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Ensure proper recordkeeping and documentation related to prescriptions, controlled substances, and pharmacy operations.
  • Investigate and resolve compliance concerns, medication errors, and regulatory issues.
  • Oversee procurement, storage, security, and inventory management of medications and controlled substances.
  • Monitor medication utilization and ensure appropriate inventory levels.
  • Conduct regular audits of controlled substance records and inventory.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of expired or unusable medications.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, interns, and support staff.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, education, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet operational and patient care needs.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and patient safety.
  • Promote medication safety and adherence to best practices.
  • Review and resolve medication-related issues and patient concerns.
  • Ensure patient counseling services are provided as required by law and professional standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance monitoring activities.
  • Assist with budgeting, cost control, and financial management of pharmacy operations.
  • Monitor inventory expenses and vendor relationships.
  • Review operational reports and implement strategies to improve productivity and profitability.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve a positive, supportive workplace culture that encourages teamwork, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Provides strong leadership, setting clear expectations and modeling professional standards.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively with staff, clients, families, community partners, and regulatory agencies.
