About The Position

This Hydrogeologist position is in the Corrective Action Branch of the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section. The Hydrogeologist provides technical and programmatic support to the UST Section and associated Regional Offices to ensure the efficient fulfillment of the Section’s mission. The Hydrogeologist develops technical guidance documents and Section policies to support consistent program implementation and regulatory compliance. This position independently manages UST-related programs, projects, and training initiatives, ensuring effective program administration and continuous staff development and serves as a key technical resource for responsible parties, environmental consultants, licensed geologists and hydrogeologists, licensed engineers, and other stakeholders. In addition, this position supports the Department’s emerging contaminants and PFAS initiatives by assisting with PFAS sampling and analytical strategies, evaluating and implementing remedial measures, contributing to rule development, and providing training and technical support to UST Section staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science or a related field, or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work from an accredited college or university.
  • Some positions may require licensure as a Professional Geologist by the North Carolina Board for the Licensing of Geologists; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the development and maintaining clear, well-organized program guidance documentation for UST staff and the regulated community.
  • Updates and maintains databases, document management systems, and the UST Section website.
  • Assists with the development of outreach materials and provides training for the assessment and corrective action guidance and policy, as well as State and Federal UST and non-UST regulations, for UST Section staff, the regulated community and the public.
  • Serves on committees supporting special projects and Department initiatives directed by Section Management or the Division Director.
  • Supports the Department’s emerging contaminants and PFAS initiative.
