The Pet Care Specialist provides daily care for shelter animals, including dogs and cats, through cleaning, feeding, watering, medicating, behavior assessment, training, socialization, and enrichment. The role includes maintaining clean and orderly animal areas and other shelter spaces, following cleaning procedures and product-use guidelines, and monitoring animal welfare, including whether the Five Freedoms are being met. Concerns about animals must be brought to a supervisor. The specialist supports adoptions by speaking with potential adopters about their homes and lifestyles, showing animals safely, answering questions about animal care and veterinary needs, and providing professional, compassionate customer service to clients, staff, adopters, foster parents, and the public. The role also assists with shelter operations and may involve transporting animals on campus or by vehicle to events, visits, meetings, or other agencies. Other job-related duties concerning shelter animal management and well-being may be assigned. This position is designated safety-sensitive under the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act. Employees in this classification may face disciplinary action, up to and including termination, for positive marijuana tests even if they hold a medical marijuana license. Applicants must pass a background check.
