About The Position

Suffolk County Government is currently seeking candidates for the role of Personnel Analyst - Trainee. This position involves learning to perform entry-level professional work in public personnel administration under the direct supervision of a Personnel Analyst or Senior Personnel Analyst. Employees will work closely with professional superiors, gaining knowledge in all aspects of the role, and may function with limited technical independence on routine tasks as they become familiar with them. Problems encountered will be referred to a superior for direction. All work is subject to review through frequent consultation and examination. The term of probation is one year, during which employees must satisfactorily complete a supervised in-service training program. After one year of continuous service as a permanent Personnel Analyst Trainee, the employee achieves permanent competitive status as a Personnel Analyst without further examination. This role also does related work as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Candidates enrolled in their final year of baccalaureate studies will be permitted to compete in this examination on a pending basis.
  • Possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and during employment as a Personnel Analyst Trainee and Personnel Analyst.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews applications to determine eligibility for appointments, examinations and tuition reimbursements.
  • Assists in writing the more routine questions for use in examinations, as well as performing item analyses on examination questions.
  • Assists in position classification by reviewing questionnaires, duties statements and desk audits, and by serving as a member of survey teams.
  • Assists in compiling raw data for further analysis and use.
  • Assists in providing information to jurisdictions in matters of eligibility for Civil Service positions, employment placement and interpretation of Civil Service rules and regulations.
  • Assists in preparing and conducting standard training courses and recruitment lectures.
  • Assists in writing class specifications for titles established by the department and in reviewing specifications as directed.
  • Assists in evaluating tuition reimbursement claims and in conducting exit interviews.
