About The Position

Employees in these positions are responsible for providing customer service at the counter, over the phone and via email. They assist applicants by providing accurate, comprehensive, and professional service on a variety of issues pertaining to building permits. This includes understanding and explaining regulations, zoning, codes, policies, and permitting information that pertain to various projects and their required applications. The position serves all of Island County, and driving or traveling to outlying offices may be required. A high level of customer service and professionalism is essential.

Requirements

  • Valid WA state Driver's license.
  • High school Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of general office experience.
  • Familiarity with GIS, mapping, and typical office software.
  • Ability to use GIS, mapping systems, Smart Gov and BlueBeam programs.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Microsoft Word and Outlook programs.
  • Good time management skills, be organized and self-sufficient.
  • Ability to communicate well with customers, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Basic knowledge of regulations, Island County Codes, Zoning, Comprehensive plan, Subdivision, site and critical areas ordinances.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain and understand the need for confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of accuracy.
  • Ability to grasp new techniques.
  • Remain professional in stressful or rapidly changing situations.
  • Must be able to communicate with others orally, in person and in writing.
  • Independent, self-motivated ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines regularly.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.

  • Experience with title work, legal descriptions, permitting, or architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service at the counter, over the phone, and via email.
  • Assist applicants by providing accurate, comprehensive, and professional service on building permit issues.
  • Understand and explain regulations, zoning, codes, policies, and permitting information.
  • Perform input, intake, calculate fees, and issue permits.
  • Work positively with the public, peers, and supervisors.
  • Provide correct applications to applicants and clearly explain requirements for various permit types.
  • Responsible for daily deposits.
  • Route applications to appropriate departments or agencies.
  • Audit permits for expiration, renewal, or abandonment.
  • Use GIS, mapping systems, Smart Gov, and BlueBeam programs.
  • Manage a higher level of permits than a Permit Tech I (for Permit Tech II).
  • Mentor new employees as directed by supervisor (for Permit Tech II).
  • Run reports, queries, and audits on permitting (for Permit Tech II).
  • Demonstrate a higher level of knowledge related to problem-solving, regulations, and decision-making (for Permit Tech II).
  • Demonstrate successful performance, judgment, and leadership skills (for Permit Tech II).
  • Demonstrate a greater knowledge of Island County regulations, building and land use codes, and permitting rules (for Permit Tech II).
  • Other duties as assigned.
