About The Position

This position is responsible for performing complex permit processing and technical support for the Civil Engineering Department. The Permit Technician III will review and process a variety of permits, ensure compliance with city codes and regulations, and provide guidance to applicants. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to interpret and apply complex technical information.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in permit processing, plan review, or a related field within civil engineering or municipal government.
  • Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction methods, and relevant codes and ordinances.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting civil engineering plans and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of permit application processes and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and permit management software.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM).
  • Experience with GIS software.
  • Experience in a supervisory or lead role.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process complex civil engineering permits, including site plans, grading permits, and right-of-way permits.
  • Ensure all permit applications meet city codes, ordinances, and departmental standards.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to internal staff, developers, contractors, and the public regarding permit requirements and processes.
  • Maintain accurate and organized permit records, including digital and physical files.
  • Coordinate with other city departments and external agencies to ensure timely and efficient permit processing.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new permit processes and procedures.
  • Conduct research and gather information as needed for permit reviews and departmental projects.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence related to permit activities.
  • May provide training and guidance to lower-level permit technicians.
