The Missoula County Public Works Department is seeking a PERMIT SPECIALIST to join their team. This position performs work requiring specialized knowledge and procedures to review and issue a variety of physical and electronic permits, plans and customer service for the Public Works Department.

Requirements

  • Requires high school graduation or GED.
  • Requires two years of experience in building construction, community planning or permit review or enforcement.
  • Requires experience in serving the public, reading electronic maps, site plans, construction drawings, legal descriptions, and specification sheets.

Nice To Haves

  • ICC Building Permit Technician certification desired.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a technical review of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, land use & zoning, excavation, approach and address permit applications, both electronic & paper, to ensure completeness and compliance with existing regulations and procedures.
  • Uses specialty software to process and route permit applications within PW, to other county departments and to customers, engineers, architects or other consultants.
  • Communicates verbally and electronically with the public and staff.
  • Research and compiles data as needed to process permit applications, including but not limited to, GIS, legal descriptions, geocodes, subdivisions, and COS.
  • Coordinates with the Community and Planning Services Department and the Health Department to maintain a current training and knowledge level; to share information; and to ensure accurate processing for permit applications and the provision of excellent customer service.
  • Uses architectural scale and Bluebeam software to calculate square footages to set fees and collects permit fees; enters payment information into Odyssey and QuickBooks related to permit review.
  • Scans plan sets, maintains paper and electronic records or data related to permits.
  • Performs administrative and support tasks including reception of callers and visitors, in person, on the phone, by email, or video chat, directing visitors to the appropriate county or city offices.
  • Participates in training, continuing development, and special events.
  • Answers complex inquiries requiring interpretation of county or departmental policies, rules and regulations and procedures used to apply for and receive permits.
  • Obtains and compiles information for special reports; may conduct research on assigned subjects and develop information for management review.
