About The Position

The Perioperative Assistant provides assistance with supportive clinical tasks as defined by policy and procedure, under the direction of licensed RN staff and Surgeons. This role is crucial in supporting the operating room environment, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining the efficiency of the surgical department. The assistant will also participate in the preparation and maintenance of the operating rooms, assist with direct patient care, and is responsible for their own professional growth and development.

Requirements

• High School education
• 6 months – 1 year previous patient care experience in a hospital setting
• Ability to use computer keyboard
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• CPR certification
• Ability to rotate shifts to provide coverage
• Ability to perform heavy lifting in accordance with DOL definition, bending, squatting, standing for prolonged periods and reaching overhead.
• Ability to handle multiple requests for assistance and to work in a fast paced stressful environment
• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.

Responsibilities

• Support staff in other departments as needed.
• Assist staff with repositioning patients within clinical areas.
• Relocate equipment within the department/hospital.
• Perform point of care testing following guidelines set by hospital policy.
• Communicate with patients, families, and the healthcare team in a competent, courteous, and professional manner.
• Identify and transport patients to and from surgery.
• Respond to codes in the OR and PACU.
• Operate positioning equipment under supervision.
• Participate in the preparation of the Operating Rooms/Case: remove all case carts from sterile lift and transport to appropriate area, ensure equipment is clean and returned to storage, clean instruments when OR/SPD instrument team is not available, review surgeon preference cards and ensure all items/equipment are present, place linen and trash bags on case carts, assist nursing personnel with OR set up, monitor open sterile fields during surgical delays, retrieve and transport sterilized items from autoclave/Steris to OR rooms, remove instrumentation/equipment/supply items from case carts prior to transport to Sterile Processing, return unused case carts to Sterile Processing, assist nursing personnel in end of case clean up by placing dirty instrument trays, garbage, and suctions on case cart, ensure suction canisters have solidifying agent before placing on cart.
• Participate in maintenance of the Surgery Department: conduct between case room cleaning (tables, floors, equipment), make OR bed with clean linen, use appropriate germicide for disinfecting rooms, handle chemicals and solutions following policy, run biological testing for implants flash autoclaved in OR, maintain blood refrigerator ensuring inventory levels and availability of gauges and keys for oxygen tanks.
• Ensure the Surgery area is appropriately stocked and supplied: transport deceased to morgue, transport equipment/supplies between OR, PACU, SPD, and other units, obtain supplies/beds/equipment from other hospital areas, monitor sterile items on case carts and notify Sterile Processing of missing items, procure blood/lab/pathology reports/radiology films and other patient information to the OR, deliver specimens to laboratory/pathology, clean and prepare patient carts and wheelchairs between patients’ use, ensure work areas are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion, document cleaning equipment on appropriate form, monitor and inform charge RN when supplies are needed, stock and obtain supplies from inventory store room, ensure fluids and blankets are placed in warmers and replenished.
• Assist with direct patient care under the direction of Nursing staff: assist with postmortem care and transport deceased patient to morgue, assist nursing personnel in transferring patients to and from OR tables, beds, wheelchairs, stretchers or carts, assist nursing personnel in positioning and maintenance of patient safety, assist with regional anesthesia by holding patient in position for spinal/epidural blocks, assist nursing personnel in performance of surgical preps by holding affected extremities, perform surgical clipping for surgical patients.
