About The Position

Capital Health is seeking a Perinatal Safety Coordinator for Labor & Delivery. This full-time position involves assuming 24-hour accountability for investigating obstetrical adverse events, identifying and operationalizing strategic imperatives to improve clinical practice, and developing a conceptual framework for patient safety within the perinatal setting. The role focuses on implementing and sustaining a comprehensive unit-based Safety Program, including perinatal safety strategies, in-situ simulation for practicing safety skills, and leading interdisciplinary reviews. The coordinator will collaborate with physicians and nurses to create training programs, foster clinician participation in educational initiatives, and oversee patient safety to ensure high-quality care. Responsibilities also include reviewing and responding to safety reports, participating in daily huddles, staying updated on national standards and literature, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The position involves working with leadership to develop policies, coordinating with Risk Management, Regulatory, and Quality departments for data analysis and reporting, and reviewing medical records. Collaboration with Quality and Safety departments to identify gaps and needed programs is also key. The coordinator will lead the Patient Safety Committee for Obstetrics and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in nursing.
  • Five years staff RN experience in a maternal and child health unit.
  • AHA ACLS or must obtain within 6 months of hire date
  • AHA NRP or must obtain within 6 months of hire date
  • AHA PALS or must obtain within 6 months of hire date
  • Registered Nurse - NJ
  • Strong computer skills required; MS Office (Work, Excel, Power Point).
  • Excellent ability to effectively manage projects and initiatives and to provide desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and bring together diverse groups together in a collaborative and effective manner.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to develop and present reports and educational materials.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior leadership, quality, or safety experience preferred.
  • Data analysis and quality experience; knowledge in lean, six sigma or other process improvement techniques desired.
  • Certification in Obstetrics and EFM.
  • CPPS or CPHQ certification to be obtained within one year of assuming the role.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes 24-hour accountability for investigating all obstetrical adverse events.
  • Assists to identify and operationalize strategic imperatives to improve the clinical practice that achieve high quality patient outcomes and error mitigation in close collaboration with leadership.
  • Develops and maintains a conceptual framework for patient safety and improvement activities within the perinatal clinical setting.
  • Summarizes findings and provide recommendation for improvement initiatives.
  • Implements and sustains a comprehensive unit-based Safety Program for the clinical teams to make care safer by combining improved teamwork and communication, clinical best practices, the science of safety, and patient and family engagement.
  • Implements perinatal safety strategies including but not limited to safe electronic fetal monitoring, rapid response safe medication administration general labor, and delivery unit safety.
  • Establishes a program of in situ simulation to practice perinatal safety skills focusing on why it is an important part of improving perinatal safety.
  • Simulation Scenarios including postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, umbilical cord prolapse, antepartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia or seizure, uterine tachysystole, magnesium toxicity, vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) and bdominal pain, and postoperative Cesarean section complication.
  • Leads interdisciplinary fetal strip and case reviews.
  • Collaborates with physicians and nurses to create perinatal training programs.
  • Fosters and promotes participation by all clinicians in educational programs and clinical drills.
  • Facilitates and supports teamwork and training program for all department members.
  • Develops, implements, and oversees patient safety to ensure delivery of the highest quality patient care, optimal patient flow, provider productivity and continuity of care.
  • Reviews, investigates, and responds to safety reports in a timely manner.
  • Participates in daily huddles providing safety updates and messaging including utilization of HRO tools.
  • Keeps abreast of changing national standards of clinical practice and perinatal safety evidence based literature.
  • Disseminates pertinent safety and specialty related information.
  • Assists in the monitoring, assuring, and coordinating to ensure patient safety activities are in compliance with requirements of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Works with the leadership to develop and ensure the implementation of policies to minimize risk within the organization.
  • Coordinates with Risk Management, Regulatory, and Quality to develop audit tools and systems, perform data analysis, and prepare reports related to measuring objectives and tracking.
  • Reviews medical records in real time and retrospectively of high risk patients to assure alignment to institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with Quality and Safety departments to analysis gaps in data and programs needed within the organization for collaborative participation.
  • Leads Patient Safety Committee for Obstetrics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
