About The Position

The Perfusionist assists in open heart, major vascular, and trauma surgeries. He/she operates support systems and related equipment for these surgeries under direct physician supervision. The Perfusionist collaborates with the surgical team to ensure that all issues are addressed concerning cardiothoracic perfusion equipment.

Requirements

  • 1 year minimum perfusion experience
  • Graduate of an accredited training program accredited by the Accreditation Committee for Perfusion Education in cooperation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) required.
  • Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion required.
  • BLS required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • A working knowledge of cardioplegia delivery systems, cell saver, impella, IABP, and ECMO.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related science field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively communicates with other surgical team members regarding the patient's surgery plan.
  • Coordinates evaluation with other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to achieve desired goals and outcomes.
  • Performs and documents assessment of patients' testing needs through data collection and analysis, including collection of pertinent history and physical information.
  • Makes decisions about equipment based on each assessment and develops individualized plan for each surgical patient.
  • Provides patients and their families with education related to perfusionist's role.
  • Ensures that all questions and concerns are satisfactorily resolved.
  • Assumes responsibility for attaining, retaining, and renewing all applicable certifications and continuing education, as required by both statutory regulation and departmental policy.
  • Reviews technical procedure manual for the department and may suggest corrections, additions, and recommendations.
  • Regularly provides clinical leaders with information pertaining to patient safety, opportunities to improve outcomes in surgical procedures, and improvements in systems and processes.
  • Consistently applies knowledge of policies and procedures to provide a cost-conscious, safe environment for patients, staff, and other individuals in the hospital.
  • Follows hospital-wide policies for safety, fire, hazardous materials, infection control, and medical devices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
