About The Position

Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) is seeking a Performance Dietitian to join their Team! MCCS supports and enhances the quality of life for Marines, their families, and the wider Marine Corps Community, offering a team-oriented environment with military personnel, civilian employees, contractors, and volunteers. This position is crucial for the Semper Fit, Warrior Athlete Readiness and Resilience (WARR) portfolio, aiming to improve the readiness, lethality, and resilience of the total force across all domains of fitness. The incumbent will provide sport and performance-based dietetic modalities to active duty personnel, families, and authorized users to support military readiness, applying evidence-based nutrition knowledge in operational readiness, exercise, and sports. The role involves assessing, educating, and counseling Marines on nutrition strategies to enhance lifelong health, fitness, and optimize performance, while also supporting Marine Corps sports programs. Travel to training camps and events may be required. The dietitian will analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance, counsel on optimal nutrition for training and body mass requirements, and address nutrition and hydration challenges in various environments. They will implement nutrition education for recovery from illness or injury, collaborate with other providers on practical nutritional education opportunities like cooking classes and community gardens, and develop deployment or field-based nutrition plans. Individual sessions may be provided for specific populations upon referral. The role includes developing and delivering nutrition education on supplementation compliant with DoD guidelines, creating presentations and events on performance nutrition, and teaching non-clinical nutrition and cooking classes for families and staff. Additionally, the dietitian will create digital content for public distribution and serve as the primary nutrition resource for WARR staff, managing inventory for educational materials.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Nutrition, Dietetics, Sports Nutrition, and Food and Nutrition Sciences or closely related field is required.
  • One year’s experience in an athletic or military performance environment.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential.
  • Candidates must meet several educational and professional requirements established by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics Registration (CDR).
  • ACEND-Accredited Coursework education must include; completion of a didactic program in dietetics (DPD) or a coordinated program (CP) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  • Knowledge of sports and performance dietetic and the implementation of performance-based nutrition practices that encompass social, psychological, physiological, and cultural influences of food choices in athletic, military, or first responder environments.
  • Ability to assess and analyze dietary practices and energy balance of active-duty service members in the context of athletic and military performance and health.
  • Skilled in developing short- and long-term sports or military specific performance nutrition educational services resulting in attributable performance-based outcomes.
  • Ability to assess body composition using anthropometry screening tools such as bioelectrical impedance, calipers, dual x- ray absorptiometry, or Air Displacement Plethysmograph (ADP) and educate patrons and target populations on strategies related to weight management, sports and job performance, reconditioning, recovery, and maternal health.
  • Knowledge of hydration status assessments and protocols for operational performance, training, and hydration sustainment.
  • Awareness in recognizing disordered eating, and individuals with eating disorders to include understanding medical consequences and the need to refer patrons to the appropriate medical providers.
  • Assess the safety, efficacy, and quality of nutritional supplements and monitor use of appropriate supplementation and comply with DoDI 6130.06, Use of Dietary Supplements in the DoD.
  • Knowledge to create and edit promotional performance nutrition social media or other written content aligned with health literacy levels of the population.
  • Experience in delivering hands-on training to active-duty, families, and authorized users in food selection and food preparation, field nutrition, and home and barracks cooking classes in virtual and in-person environments.
  • Understanding of various evidence-based nutrition assessment tools and the ability to tailor and implement appropriate assessment tools based on the operational and environmental needs of the unit.
  • Familiar with the military referral process and when to refer participant to a medical or mental health professional when nutritional challenges such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia, or eating disorders are suspected or known.
  • Requires a valid Driver’s License.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI).
  • Direct Deposit of total NET pay is mandatory as a condition of employment for all appointments to positions within MCCS.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Performance Dietitian for the Semper Fit, Warrior Athlete Readiness and Resilience (WARR) portfolio to improve readiness, lethality, and resilience of total force.
  • Ensure sport and performance based dietetic modalities are provided to active duty, families, and all authorized users aboard the base in support of military readiness.
  • Implement and follow Department of Defense (DoD), Department of the Navy (DON), and Marine Corps policy, applying evidence-based nutrition knowledge in operational readiness, exercise, and sports.
  • Assess, educate, and counsel Marines and implement and manage safe and effective nutrition strategies that enhance lifelong health, fitness, and optimize performance.
  • Support Marine Corps sports programs such as installation sports and all-Marine sports teams.
  • Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy intake and expenditures of Marine athletes in the context of operational performance and health.
  • Counsel Marines on optimal nutrition for unit specific training and achieving and maintaining body mass that is consistent with Marine Corps body composition requirements and optimal health and performance.
  • Address nutrition and hydration challenges to performance in garrison and field environments and consult with units and staff on optimal nutrition practices.
  • Implement standardized nutrition education with a focus on optimal nutrition recovery from illness or injury and ensures Semper Fit protocols are followed.
  • Collaborate with other providers within MCTF to achieve a wide variety of objectives and project to deliver practical nutritional education opportunities such as cooking classes, community gardens, shopping tours, and kitchen assessments.
  • Provide in-person and electronic communications with dispersed units in the development of deployment or field-based nutrition and hydration plans.
  • Provide some individual sessions when referral is made via a medical provider to address target population needs such as pregnant, post-partum, post injury, or body composition program.
  • Develop and deliver nutrition education related to supplementation that complies with the Department of Defense (DoD) dietary supplement program and stipulations in the DoD Instruction 6130.06.
  • Develop and deliver nutrition education presentations, demonstrations, or events on topics related to nutrition for performance that occur inside and outside of the performance center.
  • Develop and teach non-clinical nutrition education and cooking classes for optimal performance of families, staff, and other authorized users.
  • Create performance-based digital and educational content such as articles, social media messages, webinars, and partners with marketing teams to develop infographics using evidence-based resources for public distribution aboard the installation.
  • Serve as the primary nutrition resource for WARR staff to ensure appropriate educational content is delivered across all domains of fitness.
  • Manage inventory and needs of educational aids, supplies, and resources required to deliver operational and performance -based nutrition education and cooking skills classes.
  • Maintain liaison with various organizations to include but not limited to the Navy Medical Center, dining facilities, Marine Corps Exchanges (MCX), the Uniformed Services University-Consortium for Health and Military Performance, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the American Sports and Performance Dietitians Association.
  • Maintain working relationships with an interdisciplinary team who provide services related to physical, mental, spiritual, social fitness, sleep, and nutrition.
  • Ensure alignment between programs and methodologies, mission, and vision aligns.
  • Manage distribution and movement of secure information that is proprietary, privileged, confidential or otherwise legally exempt from disclosure.
  • Inspect and ensure installations safeguards sensitive information and prevents unauthorized reading, printing, retaining, copying, or dissemination of information, messages, or correspondence.
  • Notify supervisor immediately when proprietary information has been released and advises on how to properly recover and protect information.
  • May serve as a participant in advisory boards, working groups, and collaborations related to MCTF, WARR, and other committees to enhance primary prevention efforts across the Marine Corps.
