The Per Diem Phlebotomist I is responsible for properly identifying patients prior to drawing capillary or venous blood, collecting blood efficiently, and sending it for analysis. This role involves interacting with patients, processing information, performing venipuncture and capillary punctures, and maintaining quality control and safety standards within the laboratory and hospital systems. The position may also include lead duties or responsibilities in non-acute care facilities.

Requirements

  • CA Phlebotomy I certification
  • High School Diploma
  • Communicates effectively with patients, public and healthcare personnel.
  • Able to organize work, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Accuracy in the identification and transcription of numbers and names.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license, transportation, and auto insurance (if frequent travel is required).

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients courteously and accurately records all pertinent demographics in a timely manner.
  • Receives and processes patient and test information according to established procedures.
  • Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture according to written procedures.
  • Accurately labels all specimens with pertinent information.
  • Processes and delivers specimens as required.
  • Reports all problem punctures (venipuncture/capillary) to the person in charge.
  • Performs data input and data retrieval from laboratory and hospital information systems.
  • Operates laboratory communication systems.
  • Maintains quality control and assists in performance of Quality Improvement.
  • In the event of biological or chemical accidents, follows procedures.
  • Attends all required laboratory safety meetings.
  • Immediately reports all accidents to the supervisor verbally and in writing using the appropriate forms.
  • Maintains continued competence of technical skills and professional image.
  • Correctly prepares appropriate forms for departmental use.
  • Accurately maintains department files.
  • Consistently maintains a neat work area.
  • Orients and trains new employees to departmental procedures when required.
  • Completes any and all competency testing as assigned by supervisor.
  • May be required to work at another site if needed.
  • Oversees front office operations including Phlebotomists and Lab Aides (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Coordinates breaks/lunches (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Finds coverage for staffing issues in the absence of the Supervisor (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Sends extra staff home if workload allows (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Dispatches and coordinates phlebotomists to insure lab draws are done efficiently and timely (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Resolves order conflicts and service issues (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Makes sure all specimens are processed correctly and in a timely manner (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Checks all RN and FTC orders (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Checks pendings throughout the shift to make sure all specimens are accounted for (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Cancels any labs that are no longer needed including duplicates and discharges (LEAD DUTIES).
  • Under the direction of appropriately licensed personnel, may perform tests and procedures where assigned in the facility using protocols prescribed in procedure and instrument operations manuals (e.g. “waived” point-of-care-testing) (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • May take and record vital signs (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Makes sure all paperwork is completed (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Assists with patient flow (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Accurately enters vital signs into patient management computer system (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Enters appropriate information into medical record, adhering to medical record guidelines (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Uses department computer systems to enter and obtain information/documentation (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • May be assigned to transport patients (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Transports patients during the admission and discharge process using the appropriate mode as indicated based on the patient complaint or condition (NON-ACUTE CARE FACILITY).
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
  • Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs.
  • Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
