The Operating Engineer's role is to ensure the safe operation of all high pressure boilers and related auxiliary equipment. To fire boilers and control generation of a continuous supply of steam for heating buildings and providing hot water; maintain emergency power generators and auxiliary equipment; and, provide a comfortable physical environment for the Hospital. Supervised by Department Foreman. Supervision consists of an annual performance appraisal interview, quarterly department meetings, in-service meetings, regular boiler room meetings, and informal meetings as necessary. Provides work direction to Mechanic. Has regular contact with Hospital management and staff. Tours boiler room to observe operating equipment, meters, and gauges to insure that operation is in accord with specified instructions. Manipulates valves to control the flow of water and fuel, and to increase or decrease steam pressure as required. Adjusts equipment controls to correct malfunction when necessary. Notifies Foreman when major repairs or assistance is required. Records on log sheet and in logbook the meter, gauge, and graph readings and repair work performed. Tests and treats the boiler water daily using specific chemicals. Performs maintenance and repairs on high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment. This is a Per Diem position located at NewYork-Presbyterian / Westchester Behavioral Health.
