Requirements

  • NYSDOH Licensed as a Certified Clinical Laboratory histotechnician, histotechnologist, technician, or technologist.
  • An Associates Degree from a relevant course of study as defined by NYS clinical laboratory licensing requirements.
  • A highschool degree will only be accepted if the individual has the designated experience defined by NYS and has obtained their NYS license through the grandparenting pathway defined by NYS.
  • Experience required is 3-6 months in a histology laboratory performing technical duties.
  • The clinical experience in a formal histology program is considered acceptable experience.
  • Exposure to Computer systems.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • BS/BA in Science preferred
  • American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification as a Histology Technician (ASCP-HT) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the following routine histologic procedures: Accessioning Grossing/Wrapping of specimens Embedding procedures Section techniques involving hematoxylin and eosin Routine special staining such as demonstration of mucopolysaccharides, tissue fibers, pigments, infectious organisms like bacteria and fungi. Cover Slipping Slide, documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Trains in the use of new laboratory equipment.
  • Helps maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Preparation of solutions required for any histological examination.
