About The Position

The Piano Extension Program (PEP) has been providing piano lessons to students in the community of all ages and levels at a reasonable rate since 1996. Piano lessons at the PEP are held in the Paul Creative Arts Center and taught by a qualified roster of teachers. PEP teachers are competent at playing the piano and have a good understanding of the instrument. Being a good communicator with students and guardians is also an important aspect of the job. Teachers through the program follow the University schedule and are not essential staff in case of curtailment. However, in order to stay on schedule, they may teach their lessons virtually if campus is closed.

Requirements

Graduate Teacher Section: This section consists of teachers who have either obtained a music degree or have multiple years of experience with teaching piano.
Communicate promptly and clearly with students and guardians.
Must know how to play piano and how the instrument works.
Must be competent at reading music and understand basic music theory.
Time management is important such as starting lessons on time.
Flexible with working with different personalities, disabilities, and individual learning styles.
Enthusiastic about instructing each student.
Conscientious and professional in all interactions with students and guardians.
Prepared with teaching materials and lesson plans.

Nice To Haves

Prior teaching experience of any kind is preferable.
Experience working with children.

Responsibilities

Clear and prompt communication with students and guardians, including scheduling lesson times, coordinating make up lessons, ensuring students understand practice material, and informing them of important dates like recitals.
Teaching students materials through a lesson book or specific music, focusing on note reading, dynamics, articulation, and the history of the music and composer.
Teaching proper playing technique, including finger and hand placement, scales, and arpeggios.
Incorporating theory and ear training into lessons, including hearing games and exercises, exploring tone quality, and discussing musical composition.
