Requirements

  • Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery
  • Ability to apply lived experience in a purposeful, recovery-oriented manner
  • Experience in community-based support, outreach, or social services
  • Knowledge of Nova Scotia health, housing, and community systems
  • Peer Support certification or willingness to obtain
  • Understanding of harm reduction and trauma-informed care
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in community settings
  • Empathy, authenticity, and resilience
  • Cultural competence and commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Strong boundaries and ethical practice
  • Adaptability in dynamic community environments

  • Adaptability, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, and the ability to respond effectively in crisis situations.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and basic digital skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and group peer support in community and housing settings
  • Use lived experience to build trust, inspire recovery, and reduce stigma
  • Support individuals in achieving goals related to wellness, housing, employment, and social inclusion
  • Conduct outreach to marginalized and underserved populations
  • Engage individuals facing barriers to accessing traditional services
  • Assist with transitions such as hospital discharge and housing stabilization
  • Support system navigation including healthcare, housing, and social services
  • Advocate for participants’ rights and access to services
  • Facilitate peer-led groups, workshops, and community activities
  • Encourage community participation and reduce social isolation
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams while maintaining peer perspective
  • Promote harm reduction, trauma-informed, and culturally safe practices
  • Develop individualized, flexible support plans with participants
  • Maintain documentation, track outcomes, and participate in evaluation
