About The Position

The Peer Support Specialist will make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals, caregivers and/or families served by the National Youth Advocate Program by working closely with individuals, caregivers, and/or families to provide advocacy and support towards targeted goals.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
  • The individual must have personal lived experience with mental health or substance use issues. Qualifications for lived experience are when an individual is in recovery status from mental health or substance use or self identifies as the caregiver of a person with behavioral health challenges who successfully navigated service systems for at least one year on behalf of the person.
  • Individuals cannot be on parole, probation, or have any current court sanctions.
  • Individuals must have no disqualifying offense that complies with the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services.
  • Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Reliable personal transportation
  • Good driving record
  • Minimum automobile insurance coverage of $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury liability
  • Employees must be able to effectively work with and be respectful and sensitive to persons from various cultures, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and racial backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Complete forty hours of Peer Recovery Supporter Training through the Ohio Department of Mental Health Addiction Services (OhioMHAS).
  • Completed sixteen hours of online eBased Academy Coursework through OhioMHAS.
  • Perform all work consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program's mission, values, and philosophies.
  • Participate in developing the service recipient treatment/service plans with the service recipient, referring agency, caseworker, significant family member(s), and natural support.
  • Assist individuals/caregivers/families in activities promoting resiliency, empowerment, self-care, and wellness.
  • Assist individuals/caregivers/families in developing life skills.
  • Assist individuals/caregivers/families in skill building and reducing barriers to help promote and achieve wellness, recovery, and resiliency.
  • Provide support and interventions to individuals, caregivers, or families in crisis.
  • Model the skills that promote personal resiliency, recovery, and wellness.
  • Identify resources and services in the community that may not be available through the internal service continuum.
  • Complete all relevant training on time as state, contract, and licensing agency standards require.
  • Complete all documentation promptly.
  • Maintain client contact as required by program expectations.
  • Actively and directly engage with service recipients to meet service needs and goals/objectives of the treatment/service plan.
  • Interact with service recipients to develop a trusting, supportive relationship while assisting them in achieving their identified goals.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
