About The Position

Ideal Option is seeking a Peer Support Specialist for their Monroe location. This role is crucial in supporting individuals and communities affected by substance use disorder. The Peer Support Specialist will work in the field to assist patients in their recovery journey, represent Ideal Option at community events, conduct outreach, and build awareness about the organization's services. The position involves developing relationships with community partners, referring providers, and potential patients, as well as educating organizations and providers about Ideal Option, medication-assisted treatment, and addiction as a chronic disease. The goal is to reduce stigma, misconceptions, and barriers to accessing life-saving treatment.

Requirements

  • Must have own transportation
  • Must be extremely reliable and punctual when attending meetings, events, and staffing our onsite services.
  • Must be extremely responsive and comfortable using online communication and collaboration tools.
  • Must be comfortable working both in the field and at a home-based office and have a flexible schedule to allow for occasional after-hours events or travel.
  • Work experience in the social service field and or in the area of substance use disorder treatment is preferred.
  • Lived past experience with substance use disorder and recovery (self or loved one) is preferred but not required.

Nice To Haves

  • Will have lived experience with substance use disorder and medication-assisted treatment and will feel confident educating others and assisting those who are just beginning their recovery process.
  • At least 1 year of experience in the recovery community

Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships with existing and potential community partners, referring providers, potential patients, and other stakeholders with direct outreach, field marketing, attendance at community events, meetings, workshops.
  • Work at various partner sites throughout the area each week to raise awareness for Ideal Option’s services and guide staff members and patients through virtual intake and provider visits.
  • Provide education and training to community-based organizations and providers about Ideal Option, medication-assisted treatment, and substance use disorder to broaden acceptance of addiction as a chronic disease and continue to reduce stigma and misconceptions about the disease.
  • Develop relationships with community based organizations.
  • Provide education to individuals and organizations on Ideal Option and medication-assisted treatment.
  • Conduct needs assessments for patients.
  • Assist patients with accessing community resources.
  • Provide education with the intent to broaden the acceptance of addiction as a chronic disease, reduce stigma and misconceptions, and lower barriers to accessing life-saving treatment.
  • Highly customer-service oriented
  • Attend meetings and events as a representative of Ideal Option
  • Understanding of the evidence base for addiction treatment and familiarity with the nature and history of the opioid epidemic
  • Other duties as assigned
