About The Position

The Mental Illness Recovery Center (MIRCI) is a non-profit organization that assists homeless individuals, both adults and youth, with clinical needs and permanent housing and is seeking a Peer Support Specialist. Under the supervision of the ACT Team Lead, the Peer Support Specialist works on the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team. ACT consists of professionals from multiple disciplines who use a team approach to meet the needs of individuals with severe and persistent mental illness in community-based settings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Active Certification as a Certified Peer Support Specialist in South Carolina
  • Lived Experience with mental health and/or substance use disorder and demonstrated recovery
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License and proof of current auto insurance
  • Must have reliable transportation for travel within the local community
  • Demonstrates knowledge of behavioral health symptoms, interventions, and impact.
  • Lived experience receiving mental health and/or substance use services and has demonstrated commitment to his/her own personal recovery.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to instruct or coach others individually and in a group setting in the development of recovery skills.
  • Ability to maintain a calm, non-defensive, supportive attitude during crisis or potential crisis situation.
  • Technical knowledge working in an Electronic Medical Record.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates appropriate decision-making skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with mental health is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in daily team meetings and treatment planning meetings.
  • Provides services in the community, in accordance with the Assertive Community Treatment model.
  • Serves as a team member and shares personal and practical experience of recovery and knowledge of the delivery of mental health services to benefit the team and its clients.
  • Models recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal action to encourage wellness and resilience.
  • Provides direct peer counseling based on your own lived experiences to build rapport and trust.
  • Assess clients' needs to identify and assist in obtaining appropriate services and support.
  • Assists clients with the implementation of their goals and objectives
  • Addresses client concerns, barriers, progress, and other relevant information with the team to enhance treatment services.
  • Completes required clinical documentation in compliance with agency standards.
  • Demonstrates responsiveness and flexibility in identifying and providing services to ACT team clients.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
