About The Position

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) must have or have had a serious mental illness and be living well in recovery. The position provides peer support services—including emotional support, coaching and training, empowerment, and advocacy—to people with serious mental illness in their homes and/or community settings. The role supports peers in pursuing personal recovery goals, promoting self-determination, strengthening wellbeing and resiliency, and connecting with natural supports and community resources.

Requirements

• Have or have had a serious mental illness and be living well in recovery.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Have a GED or high school diploma.
• Be able to complete the required 40-hour Peer Support Specialist training within six months of hire.
• Have knowledge and understanding of the recovery model of service delivery.
• Have good written and verbal communication skills and basic computer skills.
• Be able to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
• Have reliable transportation.
• Provide proof of state minimum liability insurance coverage.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Have the physical mobility to walk, stoop, stand, sit, and climb steps.

Responsibilities

• Provide support to peers and assist them in reaching and maintaining personal recovery goals.
• Promote self-determination and support peers in maintaining relationships and increasing control and satisfaction in their lives.
• Promote skills that improve mental and physical wellbeing and increase resiliency.
• Assist individuals in identifying and using natural supports and community-based resources to reach and maintain recovery.
• Collaborate with individuals to develop and implement individualized treatment plans and coping/crisis plans.
• When applicable, participate in interdisciplinary meetings for individuals on the caseload.
• Follow all safety procedures and promote safety measures among the team and peers.
• File receipts and mileage promptly in the online platform.
