About The Position

Alleghany Highlands Community Services provides services and support to people in the community with behavioral health challenges and intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Peer Support Specialist Trainee performs paraprofessional duties supporting wellness and recovery for individuals within Alleghany Regional Jail. The role supports individuals experiencing mental health crises through supportive counseling, helping them express their support needs and develop recovery strategies, monitoring progress, and modeling coping techniques and self-help strategies informed by the specialist’s recovery experience and training. The position may also provide support to recovery court. Applicants must provide a cover letter describing their recovery history and time in recovery.

Requirements

High school graduate or GED.
Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
Must be or have previously been a recipient of mental health or substance use disorder services and be well along in the recovery process.
Certified Peer Recovery Specialist or willing to obtain certification within twelve months of hire.
Submit a cover letter describing recovery history and time in recovery.

Responsibilities

Provide a supportive atmosphere for individuals receiving services.
Provide supportive-level counseling throughout the Emergency Custody Order (ECO) process and refer problems to appropriate staff members as needed.
Record individuals’ progress and communicate progress and concerns to the treatment team.
Conduct follow-up outreach to individuals served through face-to-face and/or phone contact.
Assist individuals in articulating support needs and developing recovery strategies, monitoring progress, and using effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
May provide support to recovery court.
