About The Position

The Peer Support Specialist works independently to provide recovery-oriented support to Veterans and other eligible participants through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program. The position uses personal lived experience of recovery to build rapport, encourage hope, and help participants identify strengths, recovery goals, and support networks. Responsibilities include peer support, caring contacts, outreach, resource linkage, follow-up, and timely service documentation. The specialist collaborates with the program coordinator, navigator, Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN), and community partners on Veteran engagement and resource events, and participates in peer supervision. Regional travel and occasional adjusted hours for outreach and events are required. This is a full-time, grant-funded position through September 29, 2027.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Personal lived experience of recovery from mental health and/or substance use challenges consistent with the applicable peer certification pathway.
  • Current Texas peer certification, or willingness and ability to complete required training and obtain certification within agency-established timeframes.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Personal automobile liability insurance as required by the state of Texas.
  • Working computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

Nice To Haves

  • Veteran preferred.
  • Experience providing peer support, mentoring, recovery advocacy, Veteran outreach, or MVPN activities.
  • Knowledge of Veteran benefits and community resources.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish).
