About The Position

This job is located in the Mobile Integrated Healthcare Section of the Operational Services Division of the Fire Department within the City of Oklahoma City. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) provides support services as part of the Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) team. The PRSS uses training, lived experiences, and interpersonal skills to educate the public and provide support to clients experiencing substance misuse and/or behavioral health crises.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification (C-PRSS).
  • Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).
  • Knowledge of recovery principles, coping skills, advocacy techniques and community resources.
  • Knowledge of and skill in deescalating emotionally stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders.
  • Knowledge of mental health disorders.
  • Skill in managing time and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Skill in writing routine reports and correspondence.
  • Skill in using tact and persuasiveness to obtain client cooperation.
  • Ability to connect, communicate, and effectively work with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, educational, and professional backgrounds.
  • Ability to respond to persons with severe mental illness and/or substance use disorder in a positive, empathetic, and constructive manner.
  • Ability to perform crisis stabilization.
  • Ability to remain calm and think critically in emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate transportation vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Ability to clean, sanitize, and restock a vehicle and/or workstation.
  • Ability to thoroughly document encounters with clients.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with consumers, community members, Oklahoma City Fire Department personnel, 911 and 988 dispatch staff, healthcare professionals, and the public.
  • Ability to stay up to date on current trends and developments in the behavioral health field through ongoing participation in training, continuing education, and other educational opportunities.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups, including clients, community partners, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to present specialized educational programs to clients, community partners, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to evaluate educational programs and adapt them to the needs of specific target groups.

Responsibilities

  • Operating a city vehicle to respond to non-emergency behavioral health and substance abuse calls.
  • Providing peer recovery support services to clients experiencing substance misuse disorder, behavioral health crises, and co-occurring needs.
  • Utilizing lived experience, training, and interpersonal skills to engage, support, teach, and mentor clients in recovery.
  • Assisting with crisis stabilization and de-escalation in non-emergency situations.
  • Identifying client needs related to well-being, recovery, harm reduction, and access to support services.
  • Applying an integrated care and harm-reduction approach to promote client safety and well-being.
  • Establishing rapport with clients to build trust and promote productive engagement with other personnel and service providers.
  • Educating clients, community partners, and stakeholders on recovery resources, proper Narcan use, and available program services.
  • Promoting the program’s mission to reduce opioid use disorder through community outreach and education.
  • Providing non-emergency transportation to homeless shelters, urgent recovery clinics, inpatient care, or other community resources.
  • Advocating for clients while assisting with access to community services.
  • Collecting and documenting data to track progress, outcome and service delivery.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
