About The Position

The Peer Mentor (PM) will work with mentees to assist them with school and cultural integration. The PM will work with 2-3 mentees to provide academic support, social support, college and career planning, and attend school or community events with them. The PM will work closely with the Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains (LFSRM) staff to coordinate schedules, track and report hours, help with LFSRM events and office tasks, and meet regularly to discuss any challenges and successes along the way. The PM will also be required to attend workshops regarding workplace expectations and college and career readiness. Hours vary, approximately 2 hours a week during the school year and 16 hours a week during the month of June.

Requirements

  • High school Junior and Senior students who have been in the US for at least 3 years.
  • In good standings with grades and attendance.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrates commitment to the mission, values and vision of Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with mentees at least 4 times per month for the duration of the school year (September-May).
  • Provide academic support through tutoring before, during, or after school.
  • Attend social events at school such as sporting events, dances, club meetings, etc.
  • Discuss college and career readiness and goal setting with mentees.
  • Coordinate with families to attend school conferences or other events.
  • Get together outside of school to attend community events, cultural celebrations/holidays, or to simply hang out.
  • Include one meeting per month with a check-in with the mentee's family to ensure they are doing well, see if they need assistance receiving services from LFSRM staff, or have any questions about their student or the mentorship program.
  • Assist LFSRM staff with various office tasks such as organizing and keeping inventory of the storage unit and helping to file paperwork.
  • Learn about the organization and the different roles of each employee.
  • Track and report hours regularly, entering hours, activities, and feedback timely on a shared google spreadsheet.
  • Attend 1 workshop and/or activity per month, which may include workplace expectations, college preparation and campus field trips, and career readiness preparation.
  • Provide optional work during summer camp in June, assisting with setting up and cleaning up activities, leading craft or nutrition activities, recording attendance, transitioning between classrooms, and maintaining safety and fun for all participants.
  • Create a schedule that works for themselves and their mentees to meet weekly while allowing time for academics and other extracurricular activities.
  • Submit weekly updates through a shared google spreadsheet on activities performed with mentees, total time spent with them, and any challenges or successes they're facing.
  • Maintain professional communication, including establishing and maintaining a schedule for meetings, submitting updates by the due date, and replying to emails/text messages in a timely manner.
  • Use various forms of technology such as google spreadsheets, emails, and phones to perform tasks, communicate, and learn.
  • Independently problem-solve challenges that may arise and maintain communication about these challenges.
  • Communicate if the family of mentees need any services that LFSRM can provide, such as school supplies or diapers.
