About The Position

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing duties specific to the Project Worth Program or the WIC Program. Performs social and emotional learning activities and developing service-learning projects for Project Worth or documents and maintains client records and teaches classes on the advantages of breastfeeding for the WIC Program. Exercises no supervision. This position is a "grant funded" position, therefore unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Staff in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM 13.2. Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy. Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
• Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
• Must have breastfed or expressed breastmilk for at least one baby.
• Must have the ability to work outside of regular clinic hours and outside of the WIC Clinic.
• Ability to utilize Microsoft Office and basic office equipment.
• Ability to counsel and communicate clearly and effectively.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Ability to comply with all OSHA regulations and current immunization policies.
• Ability to perform all the essential functions of the job.
• Ability to work in a clinical environment.

Nice To Haves

• Bilingual in English & Spanish.
• Current or former participant in the WIC Program.
• Experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Teaches classes on the advantages of breastfeeding and the management of normal breastfeeding experiences.
• Provides information and promotes breastfeeding as the normal way to feed an infant, among peers and community.
• Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding mothers on a one-to-one basis, and provides support and follow-up as needed.
• Documents and maintains records.
• Attends all training provided for Peer Counselors.
• Teaches use, cleaning, and assembly of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk.
• Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
