Peer and Family Advocates are individuals with lived experience in the mental health system who serve as role models, companions, educators, and advocates for consumers. While not professional counselors, they are trained in basic counseling skills and are integral members of the treatment team. They assist consumers in exploring options, developing problem-solving plans, and discussing issues related to relationships, feelings, attitudes, personal goals, and individual rights. Some Peer Advocates also help consumers develop independent living skills such as money management and household tasks. Utilizing the Recovery Model, the goal is to empower consumers to envision and work towards a future with opportunities for employment, education, and independent living, supporting their recovery and the creation of a meaningful life separate from their illness.
