Peer and Family Advocates are individuals with lived experience in the mental health system who serve as role models, companions, educators, and advocates for consumers. While not professional counselors, they are trained in basic counseling skills and are integral members of the treatment team. Their role involves helping consumers explore options, formulate problem-solving plans, and discuss issues related to relationships, feelings, attitudes, personal goals, and individual rights. They may also assist consumers in developing independent living skills such as money management and household tasks. Utilizing the Recovery Model, the primary goal is to empower consumers to build a hopeful future, including possibilities of employment, education, and independent housing, supporting their journey toward recovery and a meaningful life separate from their illness.
