The PACU Staff Nurse is responsible for the overall assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients receiving anesthesia at New York Proton Center. The person in this role will provide clinical nursing care, ensuring compliance with established regulations and standards including quality assurance and accurate medical record documentation.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of professional nursing experience, required
  • Graduated from accredited School of Nursing, required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, required
  • Current valid NY Registered Nurse License, required
  • BLS and PALS certified
  • Ability to multi-task, manage multiple projects at one time, and rapidly change priorities based on patient and practice needs
  • High integrity with respect to maintenance of confidential patient information
  • Composure under pressure
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, experience with data management, and efficiency using electronic medical record systems.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 6 months of Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and peri-procedural care experience, preferred
  • Prior experience working with pediatric oncology patients, preferred
  • Oncology Information System, ARIA experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients, measure vital signs, place IVs, access central line catheters
  • Listen to patient and caregiver questions and give well informed answers in a way patients and caregivers can understand, and know when to defer questions to physicians
  • Provide pre- and post-anesthesia care and discharge instructions to patients (primarily pediatric) and their families and support the anesthesia program of the center
  • Develop and maintain an excellent level of patient centric care
  • Participate in all Quality Improvement projects by providing input as it pertains to nursing components for safe and efficient patient care
  • Provide patient education and symptom management for adult patients, as needed
  • Comply with all New York Proton Center policies related to Privacy Rules established under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
  • Perform other job-related duties, as assigned
