The EEG Technician, non-registered, is responsible for operating EEG equipment to measure and record electrical activity of the brain, primarily to assist in the diagnosis of epileptic/seizure disorders. This role performs neurodiagnostic procedures ordered by physicians, including Routine, STAT, LTM, and EMU EEGs, for both in-patient and out-patient studies. The technician obtains and documents patient medical history, explains testing procedures, prepares the patient, and performs the procedure while ensuring adherence to established electrodiagnostic and lab standards. A key responsibility is identifying and reporting critical findings to physicians, which includes monitoring continuous and long-term EEG studies. This involves reviewing ongoing studies, identifying clinical and sub-clinical seizures, normal variants, inter-ictal epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and correctly identifying and correcting artifacts. The technician also maintains patient and department documentation, provides appropriate first aid for patients exhibiting seizure signs, and works in an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) setting. This includes correct placement of non-invasive electrodes and monitoring EMU patients, as well as placement and monitoring for long-term ICU-EEG studies (critical care monitoring). The role requires effectively troubleshooting EEG recordings for quality, performing impedance checks, detecting salt bridges, and making appropriate corrections. The technician must demonstrate appropriate clinical skill and reasoning, such as deciding whether to perform activations and optimizing study quality. They notify higher classified technicians or physician technologists of issues and recognize key differences between epileptic and non-epileptic events. The technician performs these functions with limited direct supervision, depending on their competency, comfort level, and skillset.
