About The Position

The Virginia Eye Institute (VEI) is hiring a full-time pediatric ophthalmic assistant to join their busy practice. Ophthalmic assistants assist ophthalmologists by obtaining medical records, performing preliminary eye function testing, and explaining medication or procedures to patients. They work closely with ophthalmologists, gathering necessary patient information for diagnosis. Assistants typically see the patient before the ophthalmologist, preparing them for the exam and initiating the examination with standard tests and measurements.

Requirements

  • Ability to take an ocular and systemic history.
  • Ability to accurately record visual acuity.
  • Ability to perform lensometry, refractometry, applanation tonometry, basic muscle balance testing, assess pupils, assess the anterior chamber, confrontation visual fields and gross external exam.
  • Ability to administer diagnostic tests.
  • Ability to administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Ability to assist with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained.
  • Ability to set up and clean up from procedures.
  • Ability to perform advanced ophthalmic procedures.
  • Ability to assist in training of other ophthalmic assistants.
  • Ability to assist with patient education.
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms.
  • Ability to comply with all practice procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to comply with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to Manager or Compliance Officer.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews patient chart for completeness and accuracy.
  • Performs testing based on exam type, patient complaint, and history.
  • May act as a scribe, entering data into electronic medical records during physician exams.
  • Oversees patient flow.
  • Takes ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
  • Performs lensometry, refractometry, applanation tonometry, basic muscle balance testing, pupil assessment, anterior chamber assessment, confrontation visual fields, and gross external examination.
  • Administers diagnostic tests.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under physician direction.
  • Assists with in-office procedures, ensuring informed consent is obtained, and manages setup and cleanup.
  • Performs advanced ophthalmic procedures.
  • Assists in training other ophthalmic assistants.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms.
  • Complies with all practice procedures, protocols, and State and Federal regulations.
  • Reports potential or suspected errors to the Manager or Compliance Officer.
  • Maintains a positive attitude with cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure clinic efficiency.
