About The Position

This position is for students enrolled in a Doctor of Audiology degree program. The externship is for one year, beginning July 2027, with no guarantee of employment beyond the externship period. This role is an hourly version of an existing salaried position, intended for employees below the government-mandated FLSA pay threshold.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a Doctor of Audiology degree program.
Bachelor's Degree Required
High level of analytical skill in order to identify and plan for the resolution of problems encountered in clinical and research duties.
High level of skill in various audiological assessment procedures pertaining to the pediatric population.
Fundamental research knowledge, including a general understanding of research.
Emerging interpersonal relationship skills to support effective communication with patients and families, as well as other medical professionals.

Nice To Haves

Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire

Responsibilities

Directly supervised audiological assessment and management of hearing loss for children.
Providing consultation to medical, allied health, and educational personnel.
Education/instruction to patients, families, and other healthcare providers under direct supervision and with the assistance of a licensed audiologist.
Participating in and completing the requirements for the hospital's interdisciplinary Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Program.
Assessing hearing and/or vestibular function through diagnostic tests and other appropriate procedures.
Applying proper knowledge, methods, and techniques using specific diagnostic equipment.
Interpreting test findings with prompt dissemination of results using professional oral and written communication.
Aiding physicians and other providers in the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral and central auditory disorders.
Counseling patients and families, as well as other professionals regarding hearing loss and options for (re)habilitation.
Developing recommendations for management of hearing loss in accordance with departmental protocols.
Selecting, modifying, and dispensing amplification systems, cochlear implants and other assistive devices when appropriate.
Developing informational materials for families and professionals when appropriate.
Reporting problems/shortages with consignment technology, capital instrumentation and operating supplies to senior staff.
Maintaining a record of clinical activity and submitting information to primary supervisor(s) on at least a monthly basis.
Maintaining professional conduct in accordance with ethical, professional, and procedural standards.
Participating in department educational activities, research projects, and community events as assigned.
Fulfilling all requirements of the LEND Program under the direction of the LEND discipline preceptor.
Developing an Individualized Training Plan (ITP), detailing projects and assignments to be completed within the fiscal year.
Attending all required lectures.
Participating actively in practica as selected for the ITP.
Completing all required LEND paperwork in a timely fashion.
