About The Position

Under the direction of the Pediatric Pain, Palliative, and Integrative Medicine (PPIM) Unit Director, the Pediatric Acute Care Sedation Nurse is responsible and accountable for providing optimal patient care and management during procedural sedation and during transport to and off-unit procedures within the medical center. Practice will be guided by appropriate institutional standards, policies and procedures. Clinical supervision will be provided by a physician with Moderate Sedation privileges during sedation procedures. The Sedation Nurse provides initial and ongoing assessment, monitoring, intervention, and documentation during procedural sedation and during the patient’s recovery phase. The Sedation Nurse provides initial and ongoing assessment, monitoring, intervention, and documentation when administering Nitrous Oxide for anxiolysis during procedures. The Sedation Nurse coordinates scheduling of procedures with sedating provider, proceduralist, bedside nurse, child life, and the Comfort Promise Team. The Sedation Nurse may provide cross coverage/backfill for NORA cases. Actively participates in quality and performance improvement. The Integrated Pediatric Pain, Palliative Care, and Integrative Medicine Program at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals provides care across the continuum from acute to chronic/complex pain to palliative and hospice care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Our comprehensive multidisciplinary approach provides patients and families with the most up to date pain and symptom management therapies that prioritize pain prevention, pain relief, comfort and healing. We embrace a multimodal approach to analgesia, which includes integrative therapies, psychosocial support, and pain anesthesia-based modalities to provide the highest quality of care in pain and symptom prevention, assessment, and treatment. Our team is comprised of pediatric pain anesthesiologists, pain hospitalists, palliative care providers, integrative medicine practitioners, registered nurses, social work, spiritual care, and grief and loss support.
