Peace Officer Candidate - Iowa State Patrol Capitol Complex
About The Position
This is a temporary, non-sworn position with the Iowa Department of Public Safety, serving as a Peace Officer Candidate. The primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of the State Capitol Complex and Terrace Hill Governor's Residence. This includes performing building checks, operating magnetometer equipment, providing security presence and dispatching for the police radio system at Terrace Hill, locking and unlocking buildings, and supporting troopers and supervisors at Post 16. Candidates must apply separately for openings within the Iowa Department of Public Safety during the next applicable academy hiring process and are given up to four opportunities to seek employment as a Certified Peace Officer. Failure to be accepted into the DPS Academy after four attempts will result in resignation from the Peace Officer Candidate position. The DPS Academy hiring process includes Physical Fitness Testing, an Oral Board interview, a Written Test, a Polygraph, Psychological and Medical Evaluations, and an Extensive Background Investigation. Employment as a Peace Officer Candidate does not guarantee entrance into the DPS Academy.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency
- Must apply to the next DPS Academy application process and meet Minimum Hiring Qualifications in the State Code of Iowa Chapter 501
- Must meet additional hiring standards implemented by the Iowa Department of Public Safety
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation
- Must be eligible for enrollment in the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy training program
- Must pass a thorough background investigation and evaluation (including fingerprint searches) for substance abuse, or arrest and conviction records
- Must pass a physical examination and agility test to assure freedom from conditions that might adversely affect duty performance (drug screens included)
- Must pass a vision exam requiring uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 correctable to 20/20 with normal color vision
- Must pass a hearing exam with a loss not exceeding a 25-decibel average in either ear at 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 cycles
- Must pass a battery of psychological exams to determine minimum standards for mental fitness
- Must pass Oral Board and Polygraph review
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be a United States citizen
- Must successfully complete and graduate from the Departmental Academy
- Must possess the ability and be willing to work on all shifts, extended hours, holidays, and weekends
