This is a temporary, non-sworn position with the Iowa Department of Public Safety, serving as a Peace Officer Candidate. The primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of the State Capitol Complex and Terrace Hill Governor's Residence. This includes performing building checks, operating magnetometer equipment, providing security presence and dispatching for the police radio system at Terrace Hill, locking and unlocking buildings, and supporting troopers and supervisors at Post 16. Candidates must apply separately for openings within the Iowa Department of Public Safety during the next applicable academy hiring process and are given up to four opportunities to seek employment as a Certified Peace Officer. Failure to be accepted into the DPS Academy after four attempts will result in resignation from the Peace Officer Candidate position. The DPS Academy hiring process includes Physical Fitness Testing, an Oral Board interview, a Written Test, a Polygraph, Psychological and Medical Evaluations, and an Extensive Background Investigation. Employment as a Peace Officer Candidate does not guarantee entrance into the DPS Academy.
