About The Position

The PBS Engineering Managing Director is the senior technical owner for the engineering model, technical delivery, and client-transition activities needed to integrate, modernize, and re-implement capabilities across the Express Scripts technology ecosystem so that they operate with New PBM Platform. The role translates program direction into an engineering strategy, multi-year roadmap, and coordinated delivery model across federated technology, product, operations, account management, and business teams. It ensures existing systems are modernized and integrated, work from the Orchestration Hub and capability build arm can be delivered by PBS teams, client waves meet readiness criteria, and legacy services continue without disruption for clients who have not migrated. The role establishes and leads the PBS Engineering organization, overseeing delivery, integrated planning, integration and end-to-end testing, migration, cutover and contingency, and technical support for business operations. It sets the engineering model across existing systems—including code and repository strategy, environments, pipelines, testing, and release governance—and partners with New PBM Platform, product engineering, the Orchestration Hub, and existing PBM technology leaders. The Managing Director resolves complex technical issues, provides decision-ready recommendations to executives, and maintains accountability for delivery outcomes, operational excellence, financial stewardship, and policy implementation. The position calls for a bachelor's degree or equivalent related experience, with an advanced degree preferred, and 15 or more years of progressively responsible experience in technology, engineering, platform delivery, technology strategy, or large-scale transformation, including significant managerial experience. Experience in healthcare, pharmacy benefit management, regulated technology, or similarly complex transaction-processing environments is preferred. If working from home occasionally or permanently, an internet connection through cable broadband or fiber optic service with speeds of at least 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload is required. The anticipated annual salary is $209,600–$349,300, depending on relevant factors such as experience and geographic location; the role is also anticipated to be eligible for an annual bonus and long-term incentive plan.

  • Exceptional written, verbal, listening, and presentation skills, including the ability to synthesize disparate information and clearly articulate issues, recommendations, decisions, and required actions.
  • Strong executive presence, sound judgment, resilience, and ability to operate effectively in a complex and evolving environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership of large-scale engineering organizations across technology transformation, platform implementation, modernization, systems integration, and enterprise migration programs.
  • Deep understanding of complex application ecosystems, integration patterns, data conversion, testing, release management, production readiness, and operational support.
  • Command of modern engineering practices, including source control and branching, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, environment and test-data management, observability, and change and release control.
  • Experience establishing governance and delivery models across federated technology organizations and matrixed teams.
  • Ability to evaluate architecture, engineering, security, infrastructure, data, resilience, and non-functional requirements and make sound enterprise-scale technical decisions.
  • Experience leading client or customer implementations involving coordinated business readiness, technical migration, cutover, contingency, and stabilization.
  • Strong command of Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid delivery approaches, with judgment to apply fit-for-purpose methods.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted software delivery and automation, and judgment about where they add value.
  • Ability to use delivery, quality, incident, capacity, financial, and operational data to identify trends, manage risk, and guide executive decisions.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into clear roadmaps, executive narratives, operating models, and presentation-ready recommendations.
  • If working from home occasionally or permanently, a cable broadband or fiber optic internet connection with at least 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare, pharmacy benefit management, regulated technology, or similarly complex transaction-processing environments preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee configuration, data conversion and reconciliation, migration tooling, integration and end-to-end testing, cutover planning, contingency procedures, go/no-go readiness, command-center execution, and post-launch stabilization.
  • Partner with business readiness, account management, operations, finance, and product teams to establish wave-specific readiness criteria and support client and operational commitments.
