The Payroll Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of weekly payroll, ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local regulations. This role involves the calculation of weekly payroll using an in-house payroll system, performing payroll reconciliations, and reviewing timesheet data. The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a closely related field, along with two years of experience preparing and processing payroll in a medium-to-large organization. A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted. Skills required include record keeping, accounting report preparation, handling confidential information, meeting deadlines, effective interaction, technical comprehension, advanced mathematical functions, report writing, clear communication, data analysis, and problem-solving. Knowledge of VSO General Orders, accounting principles, FLSA, federal and state regulations, governmental financial administration, taxation, employer-paid benefits, financial software, fiscal record keeping laws, and auditing is essential. The role involves sedentary work with manual dexterity, sitting for extended periods, computer use, and occasional bending, squatting, reaching, grasping, and lifting up to ten pounds. The work environment is a general office setting, requiring the ability to work under stressful conditions and be available during public emergencies. The position may require skills testing and involves a selection process including education/experience review and a formal interview.
