About The Position

PEPL has been engaged to place a Payroll Manager for a growing client in the construction industry. We’re looking for a Payroll Manager who knows payroll inside and out and can own the function from start to finish. This is an in-house role—no outsourcing—so we need someone who’s confident, experienced, and ready to take full responsibility for delivering accurate, timely payroll every week.

Requirements

  • Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll in the construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of union payroll, certified payroll, and prevailing wage requirements.
  • Proficiency in payroll software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of federal and state labor laws and tax regulations.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience with mechanical contracting or specialty trades.
  • Familiarity with construction accounting systems
  • CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Run weekly payroll for both field and office staff, including union and non-union employees.
  • Maintain payroll records, time sheets, and job costing data.
  • Accurately calculate wages, deductions, benefits, and taxes.
  • Handle union reporting and ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Submit union remittances and stay current on union rules and rates.
  • Prepare and file payroll tax returns (federal, state, and local).
  • Ensure compliance with prevailing wage laws, certified payroll reporting, and labor regulations.
  • Maintain and optimize payroll systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, or similar).
  • Collaborate with IT and HR to streamline payroll workflows and reporting.
  • Generate payroll reports for finance and project teams.
  • Support internal and external audits related to payroll and labor compliance.
  • Partner with HR on onboarding, terminations, and employee changes.
  • Work closely with project managers to ensure accurate job costing and labor allocation.
