About The Position

Supervise and coordinate activities of staff engaged in recording hours of work, processing time records, compiling payroll statistics, maintaining payroll control records, and calculating payrolls.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Finance/Accounting or related field; and seven to ten years related experience and/or training
  • Extensive general computer and PC knowledge and experience plus extensive experience with automated payroll systems, accounting and spreadsheet programs
  • Extensive computer knowledge and experience in PC use, including, but not limited to spreadsheet analysis, word processing, presentation programs, data base use
  • Ability to recognize the appropriate software tool to use for most situations
  • Directly supervise 2 employees in the payroll department
  • Interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Able to multi-task and work independently with a great attention to detail

Responsibilities

  • Review, or direct review of, personnel records to determine names, rates of pay, and occupations of newly hired workers, terminations and changes in wage rates and occupations of employees are recorded in accordance with the information received from Human Resources.
  • Review, initiate and/or approve all payroll procedures, whether new or revised.
  • Record, or direct recording of, new or changed pay rates in payroll system.
  • Direct the inputting of payroll data into the payroll system in accordance with company policy.
  • Maintain and reconcile payroll deductions for health insurance, pension, union dues and other benefits. Ensure benefits are compiled correctly and prepare check request for payment of deductions to appropriate vendors.
  • Participate in special projects to research and implement new payroll or processing systems, provide input to the implementation of new personnel or data processing systems to ensure uninterrupted payment to employees.
  • Interpret company policies and government regulations affecting payroll procedures.
  • Direct and review the preparation of government reports.
  • Review payroll to ensure accuracy.
  • Determine work procedures, prepare work schedules, and expedite workflow.
  • Issue written and oral instructions.
  • Assign duties and examine work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
  • Study and standardize procedures to improve efficiency of subordinates and the processing of payroll.
  • Adjust errors and complaints.
  • Train payroll personnel with regard to payroll policies and procedures, both new and old.
  • Perform other duties as needed or requested.
  • Adhere to organization’s standards by completing annual mandatory trainings in a timely manner on topics including – but not limited to – Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, IT Security Awareness, Compliance, OSHA, HIPAA and any other training the organization may deem necessary in regard to regulatory compliance or good business practices.
