About The Position

At Solucient, payroll and benefits are more than transactions. They directly affect our employees and the confidence they have in the organization. We are looking for a Payroll & Benefits Specialist who takes pride in getting the details right, meeting deadlines, protecting confidential information, and making processes easier for others. This role is primarily responsible for processing Michigan and Illinois payroll and coordinating employee benefits administration. You will work closely with both Accounting and Human Resources to support employees from new-hire onboarding through ongoing payroll and benefit needs. As part of the Accounting team, you will also develop broader accounting experience by supporting areas such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, cash applications, reconciliations, expenses, and inventory transactions.

Requirements

  • Previous payroll, benefits, accounting, bookkeeping, or related experience.
  • Multi-state payroll experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of payroll processing, deductions, payroll taxes, and recordkeeping.
  • Basic accounting and reconciliation knowledge.
  • Experience with payroll, HRIS, accounting, or ERP systems.
  • Strong Excel and technology skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization.
  • The ability to manage recurring, time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving and follow-through.
  • The judgment and discretion necessary to handle confidential employee and financial information.
  • A genuine desire to help employees and teammates.
  • An associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Human Resources, or a related field or equivalent work experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Process accurate and timely payroll for employees in Michigan and Illinois.
  • Review timekeeping, earnings, overtime, PTO, deductions, taxes, reimbursements, and other payroll transactions.
  • Process new hires, terminations, compensation changes, deductions, and other employee changes.
  • Maintain accurate payroll, tax, direct deposit, and employee records.
  • Reconcile payroll activity, deductions, benefit invoices, and related accounts.
  • Coordinate employee benefit enrollments, changes, terminations, and annual open enrollment with HR.
  • Support payroll tax reporting and quarter-end/year-end payroll activities.
  • Respond to employee payroll and routine benefit questions with professionalism, care, and confidentiality.
  • Maintain awareness of Michigan and Illinois payroll requirements and appropriately escalate compliance questions.
  • Partner closely with HR to coordinate payroll and benefit onboarding.
  • Participate in new-hire orientation and help employees understand payroll schedules, benefit enrollment, and related processes.
  • Ensure payroll and benefit changes move accurately between HR, Accounting, payroll providers, and benefit providers.
  • Help create an employee experience that is organized, responsive, and easy to navigate.
  • Support AP, AR, invoicing, cash applications, expenses, and routine accounting transactions.
  • Complete assigned account reconciliations and inventory transactions.
  • Research discrepancies and help resolve accounting issues.
  • Support month-end activities and other Accounting priorities.
  • Cross-train across accounting functions to strengthen your skills and provide team coverage.
