The Payroll Analyst reports to the Director, Accounting & Corporate Reporting and works under the guidance of the Senior Payroll Leader. This position is responsible for assisting in the administration and preparation of the corporate payroll including all year-end processes, development of reports including timely distribution, preparation and input of journal entries, maintenance of data in SAP and Dayforce, ensuring compliance with collective agreements, and preparation of account reconciliations. The role is also responsible for completing testing and implementing all system upgrades and customizations, resolving payroll errors and issues, and supporting Human Resource reporting and planning. This position requires a high level of discretion in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information. This position would appeal to a fast-paced and well-organized individual who has a background in payroll, shows attention to detail and is able to identify and implement process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma and Level 1 payroll certification, Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) or equivalent certification.
  • Minimum 5 years of payroll experience, including year-end experience.
  • Strong payroll systems experience, including participation in system upgrades, testing, implementations, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Proven ability/experience in above noted responsibilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, organizational skills, and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a deadline‑driven environment.
  • Proven ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve payroll, time entry, and system errors, including issues involving third‑party vendors, pension, and benefit providers.
  • Experience maintaining employee master data and performing reconciliations related to payroll, pension, and benefit accounts.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, recommend, and implement process improvements with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Experience preparing internal and external reports using payroll and Human Resource systems.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Must be able to work independently and be a strong team player.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes, including ability to effectively liaise with employees, managers, Human Resource partners, timekeepers, and external service providers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Proven track record of good performance and attendance.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands‑on use of SAP payroll modules and Ceridian/Dayforce an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Process full cycle payroll for salaried and hourly employees, ensuring compliance with AltaLink requirements as well as Canada Revenue Agency and government regulations.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve time entry, system or other errors and issues.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot errors from service providers.
  • Actively participate in testing and implementing systems upgrades and customizations of SAP modules, Dayforce interface as well as on-going maintenance of all systems.
  • Recommend and facilitate the implementation of process improvement opportunities.
  • Liaise with Human Resources and managers in preparation of payroll.
  • Respond to enquiries from employees, timekeepers and managers in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with pension and benefit providers including performing employee by employee account reconciliations.
  • Maintain master data in SAP and personnel files.
  • Prepare internal and external reports using programs such as Dayforce, SAP and Excel.
  • Provide payroll subject matter expertise.
  • As required, provide out of office coverage for the Senior Payroll Leader.
  • Other ad hoc payroll duties.
