About The Position

Responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll while maintaining the accounting, compliance, reporting, and reconciliation activities associated with payroll operations. This position serves as a subject matter expert for payroll accounting and collaborates closely with Operations, Human Resources, and the Finance Team to ensure payroll-related transactions are properly recorded, reconciled, and compliant with all federal, state, local, union, and company requirements. The Payroll Accountant is expected to identify and resolve root causes of payroll issues, strengthen internal controls, support audits, and drive process improvements across payroll and workforce-related accounting functions. Requirements

  • 1-3 years of payroll experience required.
  • Construction industry experience required.
  • Union payroll experience required.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong understanding of payroll taxes and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with union payroll, fringe benefits, and prevailing wage requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business preferred.
  • Certified payroll and prevailing wage experience preferred.
  • Multi-state payroll experience preferred.
  • Experience with Vista by Viewpoint or similar ERP systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process weekly payroll for union and non-union employee groups.
  • Review employee time entries, pay rates, deductions, and earnings for accuracy.
  • Process payroll adjustments, retroactive payments, corrections, and terminations.
  • Maintain payroll records and supporting documentation.
  • Administer garnishments, child support orders, tax levies, and other employee deductions.
  • Ensure compliance with wage and hour laws, collective bargaining agreements, and company policies.
  • Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts including: Payroll clearing accounts, Wage accruals, Payroll tax liabilities, Benefit liabilities, Union fringe benefit liabilities, PTO and accrued compensation accounts.
  • Analyze payroll variances and investigate discrepancies.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
  • Prepare payroll-related schedules for financial reporting and audit support.
  • Maintain payroll burden calculations and labor allocation methodologies.
  • Prepare and remit payroll tax payments.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual payroll tax filings.
  • Coordinate W-2 processing and year-end payroll activities.
  • Manage unemployment compensation filings and notices.
  • Prepare union reports and fringe benefit submissions.
  • Coordinate certified payroll reporting and prevailing wage compliance requirements.
  • Assist with responses to tax notices, government inquiries, and payroll audits.
  • Maintain payroll procedures and desktop documentation.
  • Identify payroll processing issues and determine root causes.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements and internal controls.
  • Support payroll system testing, upgrades, and implementations.
  • Assist with maintaining union rate tables, payroll deductions, tax tables, and employee master data.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and segregation of duty requirements.
  • Serve as a resource for employee payroll inquiries.
  • Support Operations with labor reporting and job cost inquiries.
  • Assist Human Resources with employee onboarding and payroll-related changes.
  • Partner with management to resolve payroll compliance and reporting issues.
