About The Position

As the decision scientist, payments you will help bring that mission to life by combining deep payments processing expertise with strong analytical capabilities. This role is critical in driving the reduction of customer friction, enabling effortless transactions, and maximizing operating income (OI). You will conduct advanced analysis of payments data to uncover hidden opportunities and drive operational excellence. You will own and continuously refine the Payments KPI framework and provide powerful insights to our stakeholders. This role is ideal for someone who is eager to learn, and excited to unlock opportunities which lead to high impact results. The position sits within the Global Brand business unit, embedded in the Digital division that drives customer engagement through innovation, personalization, and seamless digital experiences. Reporting to the Group Manager, Payments, you will work closely with payments strategy leads and partner across Product, Engineering, Legal, Finance, and Operations, as well as collaborate with external vendors, card brands, and partners to deliver key initiatives. Your work will directly shape the customer journey and support Starbucks’ continued leadership through payments innovation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years experience in data analytics or similar roles.
  • 3+ years experience in payments with a proven track record of delivering impactful payment analysis.
  • Proficiency in SQL, Excel and PowerPoint, Python experience a plus.
  • Experience with visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI.
  • Advanced ability to apply techniques to identify trends and patterns.
  • Strong communication skills: experience translating complex data findings into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Payment ecosystem knowledge: understanding of the end-to-end payments ecosystem — including card networks, tokenization, payment processors, gateways, stored value systems, and relevant regulatory environments.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: strong relationship-building and communication skills; able to align stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Finance, Operations, and Legal.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct advanced analysis using payment data to deliver actionable insights that inform business decisions, improve transaction performance, and drive operating income (OI) and cost efficiency.
  • Partner with stakeholders, BI, and engineering teams to define payments analytics requirements and set analytics roadmaps.
  • Own and continuously evolve the Payments team’s KPI framework, ensuring metrics are clearly defined, actionable, and well understood—supporting internal decision-making and effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Design and deliver high trust, scalable enterprise payment analytics solutions and dashboards that enable decision-making and performance monitoring at scale.
  • Ensure Starbucks’ cost of payments is managed efficiently through detailed cost analysis, identifying savings opportunities, ensuring partner cost adherence, and keeping stakeholders informed of overall payments performance.
  • Oversee transaction approval performance through deep analysis of approval drivers, identifying optimization opportunities, mitigating declines, and delivering clear, actionable reporting to stakeholders across the payments ecosystem.
  • Support business case development by providing cost/benefit analysis to guide prioritization and ensure strategic alignment.
  • Guide, mentor, and coach internal partners and stakeholders on payments data, metrics, and KPI interpretation.
  • Act as a data steward, ensuring payments data quality, integrity, and accuracy across reporting and analytics.
  • Leverage payments data to inform Finance on expected and realized returns for payments initiatives, supporting ROI measurement, forecasting, and ongoing performance reconciliation.
