About The Position

The Department of Public Safety and Police at James Madison University is accepting applications for a full-time Patrol Officer. This role involves patrolling university property, buildings, warehouses, storage areas, and grounds on foot or in a vehicle to enforce laws and regulations, prevent crime, and investigate/control disturbances to protect life and property. The officer will also manage crowds, traffic, parking, and pedestrians, issue citations, and investigate traffic accidents. Responsibilities include responding to emergencies, administering aid, investigating suspicious activity, preparing records and reports, conducting initial investigations, securing evidence, and apprehending suspects. The role may also involve serving legal papers, testifying in court, providing escorts, offering information and directions, identifying safety hazards, and operating communication and police equipment, including cameras, fingerprint equipment, mobile data terminals, and in-car video systems.

Requirements

  • VA DCJS police certification and NCIC/VICIN B level required
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and techniques of law enforcement and applicable laws and regulations
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of police equipment relevant to the job and in the use of carried weapons
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and interpret laws, rules and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to perform investigations
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain before employment
  • Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays and required overtime
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check
  • Completion of an I-9 form and presentation of documentation of identity and eligibility to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and updating a variety of records and reports
  • Conducting initial investigations
  • Securing evidence and apprehending, detaining and arresting suspects
  • Serving legal papers as required
  • Testifying in court and at administrative hearings
  • Providing escort to students, staff, visitors, dignitaries and persons transporting money
  • Providing information and giving directions to employees, clients and visitors
  • Identifying hazards which may endanger public safety
  • Operating a variety of communication and police equipment
  • Using cameras, fingerprint equipment, mobile data terminals and in-car video systems
