The Department of Public Safety and Police at James Madison University is accepting applications for a full-time Patrol Officer. Requirements

  • VA DCJS police certification and NCIC/VICIN B level required.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and techniques of law enforcement and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of police equipment relevant to the job and in the use of carried weapons.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and interpret laws, rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain before employment.
  • Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays and required overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Patrolling university property, buildings, warehouses, storage areas and grounds on foot or in a vehicle to enforce laws and regulations.
  • Prevent crime.
  • Investigate/control disturbances and protect life and property.
  • Controlling crowds, traffic, parking and pedestrians.
  • Issuing tickets/citations to traffic violators.
  • Reporting traffic accidents and conducting accident investigations.
  • Responding to emergencies and requests for assistance.
  • Administering aid.
  • Investigating suspicious persons or unusual events.
  • Preparing and updating a variety of records and reports.
  • Conducting initial investigations.
  • Securing evidence and apprehending, detaining and arresting suspects.
  • Serving legal papers as required.
  • Testifying in court and at administrative hearings.
  • Providing escort to students, staff, visitors, dignitaries and persons transporting money.
  • Providing information and giving directions to employees, clients and visitors.
  • Identifying hazards which may endanger public safety.
  • Operating a variety of communication and police equipment.
  • Using cameras, fingerprint equipment, mobile data terminals and in-car video systems.
