About The Position

Patrol campus by motor vehicle, by foot, by electric vehicle, and/or by bicycle providing protection of life and property. Keep the peace, conduct preliminary investigations, submit reports, enforce university parking regulations, and respond to medical emergencies and illness calls. Updates daily activity logs as needed and in a timely manner; completes written incident and investigative reports in a timely, clear, and well-written manner. In addition to reports, the position is responsible for compliance and training. Give directions and assistance to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Must possess, carry on person and keep current a BSIS California Consumer Affairs Guard Card, and baton permit. Must possess current first aid OC Spray certification, and CPR certification. Perform any other duties as needed or assigned to accomplish the mission of the Public Safety Department.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Will be required to attend and pass PC832 CA POST Training prior to completing FTO training in order to retain employment.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations as applicable to Public Safety functions
  • Skills in the operation of a motor vehicle under emergency and other Public Safety related conditions, with the ability to understand and follow University safe driving procedures and the California vehicle code.
  • Accurate report writing skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Ability to quickly assess a situation and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to prepare criminal cases for prosecution and to effectively testify in court.
  • Ability to interpret and follow University and OSHA safety codes, regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to conduct safety training.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in a helpful, effective and professional manner in person, by telephone and by two-way radio.
  • Legible handwriting such that all logs and reports can be easily read by others.
  • Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and departmental tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work and serve a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels both inside and outside the University.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Must possess, carry on person and keep current a BSIS California Consumer Affairs Guard Card, and baton permit.
  • Must possess a valid OC/Pepper Spray certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain in good standing a California Driver’s License.
  • Must successfully past a medical examination prior to employment.
  • Will be required to attend and participate in yearly Arrest and Control training

Responsibilities

  • Provide motor vehicle and foot patrol of campus roadways, walkways, parking lots, academic buildings, and residential areas. May provide patrol by bicycle or ESV
  • Respond to calls issued via radio and telephone dispatch.
  • Provide for the protection of life and property.
  • Ensure buildings are locked and secure as appropriate and respond to building alarms.
  • Give directions, provide assistance to students, staff, faculty and visitors as requested and when appropriate.
  • Direct traffic on campus as necessary.
  • Respond to requests for emergency and routine medical assistance as required
  • Determine medical needs, administer first aid as necessary, and summon additional medical assistance as required.
  • Receive after-hours notice of work-related injuries for University employees.
  • Ensure department activity log is updated accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Make recommendations, when appropriate, which reduce or eliminate conditions which lend themselves to unsafe conditions or expose University and personal property to theft or damage.
  • Observe safety hazards and report them to the proper persons for correction.
  • Handle transfers of large sums of money and/or provide escort of University employees transferring large sums of money to alternate campus locations.
  • Conduct safety training for students including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and disaster preparedness.
  • Conduct investigations of reported crimes and other incidents occurring within the jurisdictional boundaries of the University and submit reports regarding those investigations.
  • Investigate traffic accidents within the jurisdictional boundaries of the University, prepare accident reports, and enforce laws and regulations per California Vehicle Code.
  • Write reports and prepare cases for prosecution.
  • Testify in courts as required.
  • Enforce parking regulations in parking lots and in other areas as necessary and required.
  • Ensure that abandoned or illegally parked vehicles are reported and dispositioned appropriately.
  • Issue bicycle licenses.
  • May be required to exercise the powers of arrest only while on duty with the Department of Public Safety and while performing authorized assignments when directed on properties and facilities owned, operated and/or controlled by Chapman University, within the city of Orange and in accordance with the current Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Orange.
  • Other duties as assigned.
