About The Position

The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office offers lateral transfers to patrol deputies who have law enforcement experience in the state of Virginia. In partnership with our community, the members of the Sheriff’s Office promise to provide all citizens with the highest degree of protection for their lives and property, and to develop community responsibility at reducing crime and enhancing safety through problem-solving tactics, thereby creating an environment where crime cannot flourish. Starting annual salary will be determined based on career ladder level and years of experience. Incumbents will primarily serve within Hanover County schools. This is a sworn position. The incumbent provides law enforcement services and protection for the Hanover County community. This work involves an element of personal danger. The Deputy Sheriff position is part of Hanover County's Career Development Plan (CD). The Deputy Sheriff has six (6) levels ranging from Deputy Sheriff to Deputy Sheriff – Corporal. The Deputy Sheriff reports to a Lieutenant and supervises no staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • 21 years of age or older by academy graduation
  • U.S citizen
  • Minimum vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/40
  • Valid driver's license (must obtain a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire)
  • Passing score on written test
  • Comprehensive background investigation
  • Polygraph examination
  • Physical exam/drug test
  • Psychological evaluation
  • Physical agility test

Nice To Haves

  • Law enforcement experience in the state of Virginia (for lateral transfers)
  • Knowledgeable of the Sheriff's Office's standard operating procedures, rules and regulations, and executive orders, preferred.
  • Experience in handling stressful and dangerous situations and managing them toward positive resolutions, preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols an assigned area and detects violations of traffic and criminal law and suspicious activity.
  • Responds to radio calls for service.
  • Serves warrants and makes arrests.
  • Handles domestic disturbances and a variety of citizen complaints.
  • Directs traffic as necessary.
  • Investigates automobile accidents and assists disabled motorists.
  • Conducts criminal investigations.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
