About The Position

The Patient Transporter, Interventional Radiology, Per Diem position is responsible for transporting patients and/or visitors within the hospital. This includes moving patients between departments, to and from ancillary areas, and assisting with admissions and discharges. The role also involves assisting at the main lobby, greeting patients, and ensuring patient confidentiality and privacy during transport. The transporter must practice good body mechanics, monitor patient condition during transport, report any issues to nursing staff, and maintain a clear and safe environment by properly storing equipment and exercising caution. Staying current with emergency management procedures, adhering to precautionary methods for patients on precautions, and practicing good hygiene are also key aspects of the role. Effective communication with patients, visitors, and staff, considering patient age, gender, culture, and preferences, is essential. The transporter must respond promptly to requests and notify appropriate personnel upon patient arrival/departure. The department operates 24/7 and the role may involve transferring bodies to the morgue, meeting productivity measures, overseeing hospital bed management (including coordination, preparation, and repair shop transport), and managing the return of rental beds. Additionally, the transporter conducts rounds to clear hallways of equipment, provides transportation for admissions, discharges, unit transfers, and various outpatient areas, and assists other areas during understaffing.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, files, reports and correspondence.
Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Responsibilities

Transports patients and/or visitors from department/unit to department/unit and to and from ancillary areas to include admissions and discharge.
Assists at the main lobby greeting patients and/or assisting with transport between assignments.
Identifies the correct patient for transportation prior to movement by asking the patient for name and date of birth and comparing that against the armband while maintaining patient confidentiality and patient privacy.
Practices good body mechanics when transferring and/or lifting patients.
Obtains and transports paperwork/chart with the patient.
Monitors oxygen and intravenous apparatus and reports any problems or changes in patient’s condition to nursing staff.
Reports defective equipment to the appropriate manager for repair.
Keeps hallways clear by storing equipment in the appropriate storage areas and exercise caution when moving stretchers, wheelchairs, and equipment to prevent damage to hospital property.
Stays current with emergency management by participating in drills, in-service training, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.
Adheres to precautionary methods for patients on precautions and uses personal protective equipment as necessary.
Exercises good hand-washing techniques and personal hygiene.
Prepares, disinfects, and covers equipment appropriately.
Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, and staff and is considerate of patient age, gender, culture, and stated preferences, while always maintaining patient privacy and respect.
Responds promptly to requests, problems, and questions from physicians, staff, patients, and visitors.
Notifies appropriate personnel upon arrival/departure of patient and/or miscellaneous items at unit/department while adhering to wearing a tracker.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Transfers bodies to the morgue following appropriate protocols.
Meets productivity measures and benchmarks set by the hospital which is reported quarterly.
Oversees hospital bed management, encompassing tasks such as coordinating bed movements, preparing operating rooms and ambulatory surgery units with the required beds for daily cases, and facilitating the transportation of beds to and from the repair shop.
Responsible for efficiently managing the return of rental beds.
Conducts rounds to clear hallways of beds, wheelchairs, and stretchers, ensuring that these items are promptly returned to their designated departments.
Responsible for transportation for all admissions, discharges, unit transfers, radiation oncology, dialysis, and outpatient areas and clinics.
Assists other areas in times of understaffing, providing necessary support to ensure smooth operations.
