About The Position

The Patient Transporter, Interventional Radiology, Per Diem role is responsible for transporting patients and/or visitors between various departments and ancillary areas within the hospital. This includes assisting at the main lobby, ensuring correct patient identification, practicing good body mechanics during transfers, and transporting necessary paperwork. The transporter must observe proper procedures during transport, monitor patient condition, report equipment issues, and maintain clear hallways. They also participate in emergency management, adhere to precautionary methods, practice good hygiene, and prepare/disinfect equipment. Effective communication with patients, visitors, and staff, while respecting patient privacy and age-specific needs, is crucial. The role requires prompt response to requests, notification of personnel upon patient arrival/departure, and adherence to University and unit policies. The department operates 24/7 and the transporter may also assist with transferring bodies to the morgue, hospital bed management, and returning rental beds. They conduct rounds to clear hallways of equipment and provide transportation for various patient movements across different departments and clinics, assisting other areas during understaffing.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, files, reports and correspondence.
Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

Transports patients and/or visitors from department/unit to department/unit and to and from ancillary areas to include admissions and discharge and remains attentive until their transportation arrives.
Assists at the main lobby greeting patients and/or assisting with transport between assignments.
Identifies the correct patient for transportation prior to movement by asking the patient for name and date of birth and comparing that against the armband while maintaining patient confidentiality and patient privacy.
Practices good body mechanics when transferring and/or lifting patients.
Obtains and transports paperwork/chart with the patient.
Observes proper procedures and techniques during patient transport: monitors oxygen and intravenous apparatus and reports any problems or changes in patient’s condition (difficulty breathing, complaints of discomfort, etc.) to nursing staff.
Reports defective equipment to the appropriate manager for repair.
Keeps hallways clear by storing equipment in the appropriate storage areas and exercise caution when moving stretchers, wheelchairs, and equipment to prevent damage to hospital property.
Stays current with emergency management by participating in drills, in-service training, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.
Adheres to precautionary methods for patients on precautions and uses personal protective equipment as necessary and defined on precaution cards located outside of the patient room.
Exercises good hand-washing techniques and personal hygiene.
Prepares, disinfects, and covers equipment appropriately.
Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, and staff and is considerate of patient age, gender, culture, and stated preferences, while always maintaining patient privacy and respect.
Responds promptly to requests, problems, and questions from physicians, staff, patients, and visitors.
Notifies appropriate personnel upon arrival/departure of patient and/or miscellaneous items at unit/department while adhering to wearing a tracker.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Transfers bodies to the morgue following appropriate protocols.
Meets productivity measures and benchmarks set by the hospital which is reported quarterly.
Oversees hospital bed management, encompassing tasks such as coordinating bed movements, preparing operating rooms and ambulatory surgery units with the required beds for daily cases, and facilitating the transportation of beds to and from the repair shop.
Responsible for the efficient management of the return of rental beds.
Conducts rounds to clear hallways of beds, wheelchairs, and stretchers, ensuring that these items are promptly returned to their designated departments.
Responsible for transportation for all admissions, discharges, unit transfers, radiation oncology, dialysis, and outpatient areas and clinics.
Assists other areas in times of understaffing, providing necessary support to ensure smooth operations.
