About The Position

The Patient Transporter is responsible for providing guest and transport services within the facility. This includes transporting patients during admissions, discharges, transfers, and escorting visitors. The role also involves transporting patients with medical devices and equipment, coordinating activities to guide individuals within the facility, and ensuring the safe handling and transport of patients. Additionally, the transporter will provide basic education to patients and visitors, utilize various systems and equipment for task processing, and assist with the care and maintenance of transport equipment. A key aspect of the role is monitoring the facility environment to ensure safety and cleanliness, maintaining an inventory of transport equipment, and completing all required training and adherence to policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • BLS certified within 6 months.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds for moving and lifting patients.
  • Ability to push/pull all patient transport equipment.
  • Ability to present a good working relationship with all departments.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

  • Transport patients during admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Escort patients, visitors, and guests to desired designations within the facilities.
  • Transport patients with medical devices/equipment such as oxygen cylinders, intravenous pumps, PCA pumps, and wound vacs.
  • Coordinate activities to guide patients, visitors/guests, and staff to desired designations.
  • Adjust liter flow and determine PSI in an oxygen cylinder, and transfer canula tubing.
  • Perform safe patient handling, including moving patients, using patient lifts, and performing transfers (stand-pivot and lateral).
  • Provide education to patients and visitors/guests regarding room orientation and the transport process.
  • Answer questions regarding essential support services or provide the appropriate resources.
  • Use capacity management systems and equipment (Encompass/Epic, I Phone, Halo, computer) to process tasks.
  • Assist with the care and maintenance of transport equipment to ensure it is safe, clean, and ready for use.
  • Inspect equipment before and after use to identify defective equipment and report immediately to a supervisor.
  • Monitor facilities to ensure the environment is safe and clean, ensuring unattended equipment is removed from hallways and does not block electrical panels, fire extinguishers, or emergency exits.
  • Maintain equipment inventory throughout facilities, including stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, oxygen cylinders and carriers, and IV poles.
  • Complete and maintain required training, educational programs, and certifications.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Adhere to Advocate Health and departmental policies and procedures.
